Research needs infrastructure, investment, mentorship and passion said Dr. S R Rao, Advisor, Dept. of Bio -Technology, Govt. of India said at the second Research Day celebrations held at the SRM University, at its campus in suburban Kattankulathur. Stressing the need for doing research so that they can take the country forward. He added that the research in Nanotechnology is gaining momentum and also said a lot of research is being undertaken for disease diagnosing and treatment using Bio Technology. He said the country needs over 30 lakhs PhDs in 2025 and over 1.5 lakhs research scholars , the students should take up research in big way so that the country can face the competition in the scientific world.
Dr T R Pachamuthu Chancellor, in his presidential address said that research speaks volumes about the institution and he stressed that the industry academia interaction is the need of the hour to promote research. Lamenting on the poor participation by the industry he said the universities can satiate the need of the industry and can help in industrial growth. Dr Krishan Lal, President Indian National Science Academy turned nostalgic and referred the growth of research by taking the audience to the Ramayana and Mahabharata days. He explained that a housewife can find out the weight and the price of diamond in no time than a researcher and stressed that only research alon can bring in a change in the growth and development of the country. Dr D Narayana Rao Director ( Research) detailed the research activities of the University. Earlier, Dr. C Muthamizhselvan Director E & T of the University welcomed the gathering and said the University has made many strides and inroads in research and recalled the SRM University is the only university that has ABET accreditation in five streams and also NAAC accreditation A and also placed in A category by the UGC in its deemed university categorization and he added that entry to research alone could help in achieve the same. University officials and faculties were present on the occasion.
