The event coincided with the birthday celebrations of SRM Group of Institutions Founder Chairman and Chancellor T R Pachamuthu.  Pachamuthu and Academy Chairman and SRM University Vice-Chancellor M Ponnavaiko presented the cash awards worth Rs 20.50 lakh to the recipients at a function held on the university campus in suburban Kattankulathur. </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"> The awards were instituted by the SRM University in 2011 in line with the Sahitya Akademi awards of the Central Government with higher cash component to honour eminent  tamil scholars, researchers and authors in recognition of their contribution to the growth and development of Tamil language. </span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"> Though 10 awards were given during the last two editions, this year a new category ‘Vipulanandar Award’ was added and was given to an author, who had published Tamil books in abroad.  The award, carrying a cash component of Rs 1.5 lakh, was given to author A Muthulingam for his Tamil book titled ‘Amerikakkari’.</span></div>

It provides online education in Tamil language, Tamil religious studies and various other diploma programmes and book-publishing opportunities as well. Every year, the academy  distributes awards worth `20 lakh to scholarly works under 11 categories such as fiction, essay collection, children’s literature and research.<br />This year, under the category of ‘Pudhumaippithan Fiction Literature Award’ and ‘Bharathiar Poetry Award’, 111 books each were recommended for awards. Under ‘Azha Valliappa Children Literature’ category, there were 88 books, ‘G U Pope Translation Literature’—28 books, ‘Pe Na Appusamy Science Literature’—29 books, ‘Anandakumarasamy Fine Arts Literature’—8 books and ‘Muthuthandavar Thamizhisai Award’ category—8 books that were recommended.<br />Under the ‘Developmental Tamil Award category’, 18 books and in ‘Vibulanandar Fiction Literature Award’ category, 35 books were recommended.<br />Addressing reporters, Ponnavaiko said that the selection procedure involved a number of steps. After three to four rounds of assessment, which is done by scholars belonging to the respective fields, the final list is prepared.<br />Besides awarding the erudite literary works, the academy also presents awards to two Tamil scholars — ‘Parithimaar Kalaingnar’ and ‘Paarivendhar Painthamizh Award’. This year, 30 and 32 scholars were recommended for these awards respectively and Kovai Gnani and Thamizhannal were chosen.<br />The awards will be presented at a function to be held at the SRM University, Kattankulathur, on August 24.</div>

This year, 2013 URC was won by the third two-time champion from Poland, the Hyperion Team of Bialystok University of Technology, who finished off with a record of 490 points, outsourcing the nearest competitor by 91 points. The year 2013 saw the highest ever number of registrants, as many as 15 teams, representing different Universities across the US and Europe, and the first ever Asian team from SRM University, India with their prototype of the rover, 'Rudra.'</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"> The rover is judged in the four competition tasks, the sample return task, astronaut assistance task, terrain traversing task, presentation task. The terrain traversing task, a new event for 2013, provided the most excitement for teams and judges alike. Rovers had to race across a variety of terrain through a series of five gates. After starting with a pass through soft, sandy ground to Gate 1, through Gate 2. Another rocky pass through Gate 3 lead to increasingly steep climbs through the fourth and fifth gates. While several teams made the climb to Gate 4, most lost traction and slid down the steep hillside. Only Hyperion's rover was able to climb through the final gate during the competition.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"> While team SRM wasn't really successful in passing through all the Gates, it surely did impress the judges in the sample return task with their analytical skills. Before travelling to the United States, the team calibrated their equipment using soil samples from extreme locations from India." The techniques," says, Naren GK, a final year Biotechnology student on the team, "that we employed in detecting the signs of life, the use of laser-induced fluorescent imaging methods to detect cyanobacteria, seemed to have impressed the panel."</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"> Teams are allowed to operate their rovers from designated command and control stations, where a team is involved with controlling the rover through wireless communications methods, as the rover runs in an MDRS field site located in the desert of southern Utah.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"> While the 36-kg Rudra seemed to have given the team an advantage in terms of its stability, power capacity and its terrain traversing abilities what it seemed to lack was the design, fabrication and lack of equipments on the rover and on the communications centre. Jagadeesh RB, a Computer Science engineering student, who's in charge of the communication with the rover hopes to the WPC grants them permission for certain fabrications that are needed for the better performance of the rover on the field.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: large;"> The team is currently recruiting students from various departments of SRM University for next year's competition.</span></div></div>

P. Ganesan Auditorium, Kattankulathur on August 16, 2012. Parents and students of all the courses under Medicine and Health sciences turned out in considerable number to attend the inaugural function. The awards were announced by M Ponnavaiko, Vice-Chancellor of the SRM University.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: Calibri;">Under the aegis of the university, the Tamil Academy is engaged in the development of Tamil language, literature, arts and research. It provides online education in Tamil language, Tamil religious studies and various other diploma programmes and book-publishing opportunities as well. Every year, the academy<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>distributes awards worth `20 lakh to scholarly works under 11 categories such as fiction, essay collection, children’s literature and research.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: Calibri;">This year, under the category of ‘Pudhumaippithan Fiction Literature Award’ and ‘Bharathiar Poetry Award’, 111 books each were recommended for awards. Under ‘Azha Valliappa Children Literature’ category, there were 88 books, ‘G U Pope Translation Literature’—28 books, ‘Pe Na Appusamy Science Literature’—29 books, ‘Anandakumarasamy Fine Arts Literature’—8 books and ‘Muthuthandavar Thamizhisai Award’ category—8 books that were recommended.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: Calibri;">Under the ‘Developmental Tamil Award category’, 18 books and in ‘Vibulanandar Fiction Literature Award’ category, 35 books were recommended.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: Calibri;">Addressing reporters, Ponnavaiko said that the selection procedure involved a number of steps. After three to four rounds of assessment, which is done by scholars belonging to the respective fields, the final list is prepared.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-size: large;"> <span style="font-family: Calibri;">Besides awarding the erudite literary works, the academy also presents awards to two Tamil scholars — ‘Parithimaar Kalaingnar’ and ‘Paarivendhar Painthamizh Award’. This year, 30 and 32 scholars were recommended for these awards respectively and Kovai Gnani and Thamizhannal were chosen.<o:p></o:p></span></span><br /><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">The awards will be presented at a function to be held at the SRM University, Kattankulathur, on August 24.</span></div>

With the zeal and ardour to give life to various innovations, that are the first of their kind, the students of SRM University are organizing the country's first ever Power and Energy fest, Epiphany.  The story goes on like this, a few students pursuing their nuclear engineering, intrigued by the amount of carbon footprint that the present forms of energy are leaving behind and the fact that these fossil fuels apart from being the highest form of pollutants, are fast depleting, felt a dire need to look for other cleaner forms of energy.  Necessity is the mother of invention, they say, and rightly going by the saying, the students organizing the fest say that the need to find a clean, carbon-free and cost effective form of energy has led one to exploring the possibilities of geo-thermal and nuclear energy. Epiphany was created with a view of instigating in the minds of the young, the ideas of innovation and sustainability. A two-day fest, Epiphany'13 aims at educating the young minds on these issues and spreading awareness on the same.   The fest has a variety of events and workshops to cater to the interests of the students. The main attraction being the exhibition by IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research) that aims at conducting broad based multidisciplinary programme of scientific research and advanced engineering by showcasing various radiation detection meters and environment survey monitors. Among other events are events like iEXPO which invites students to submit abstracts on related subjects, and a Youth Nuclear Summit, a diplomatic event that focuses on International nuclear related issues such as nuclear proliferation and possible threat of nuclear terrorism.  And to keep the fest from turning monotonous, there are other events that make sure the fun part doesn't go out of the equation. To test your mental agility and oratory skills, there are events like 'Verbal Brawl' and 'Quiriosty,' a quizzing event. And to all those gaming fanatics out there, events based on gaming and treasure hunt, like 'Gladiator's Arena' and 'Trezoro Casi' are something to look forward to.  With high hopes pinned on this fest, the secretary, a 4th year Nuclear Engineering student, Tanushree Sharma, says that, this is first of the many steps that we intend to take in understanding and spreading the word on nuclear power, which is the most misunderstood source of energy. The fest with the main motto of promoting nuclear power and energy with deviating from its use a potential nuclear power is to be scheduled on the 13th and 14th o f August, 2013.</span></div>

'Face-Off' on the cricket pitch- Intra college cricket tournament.

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">The tournament first started when the departments of Computer Science and Electronics and Communications competed within their different divisions, which eventually led to a final face-off between the winning teams of the respective departments. To make this concept bigger and better, the students of these departments have organized this cricket tournament.  To make it a tournament in every sense the word, there's prize money for the winning team and an entry fee for every team that wishes to take part in the tournament. With an entry fee of Rs. 1200 for a team of 11 players, the prize money amounts up to Rs. 5000. Satyaki Ganguly, a 3rd year ECE(Electronics and Communication Engineering) student, who has been paramount to the planning of this tournament, says that this has made my college life something to look forward to, as we now take out time after college and during weekends for the matches, I'm glad that the initiative has taken shape.' And now you can find the likes of Satyaki, more on the Valliammai grounds, where the matches are taking place. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><span style="font-size: large;">E-HACK, the largest information security awareness marathon, was held at the SRM University.Over 9,000 information security professionals and students participated in this world’s largest ever ethical hacking (E-Hack) marathon, which was an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records.  “Create software for the mind than for the computers. Equilibrium thinking is one such, which teaches the art of self-management, with a mantra ‘be at it! beat it!’,” said ADGP Prateep Philip, who spoke at the event.  According to a press release, with the motto of spreading Information Security awareness and presenting it as a career option, E-Hack has been conducting such events for the past three years. Registrations for the marathon started from July 1 and it exceeded 42,000 from 261 cities across the globe.  E-HACK also attracted participants from countries like the United States, Philippines, Nepal, India, The Netherlands, Estonia, Denmark, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Pakistan, Zambia, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Syrian Arab Republic, Nigeria, Thailand, Iran, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Puerto Rico, Gabon, Egypt, Cameroon, United Kingdom, Iraq, Congo, Germany, Canada, Malawi, Albania, Morocco, Romania and Georgia, to be a part of it virtually, as the event was a live webcast.  The record-breaking event featured a series of tech talks and webinars by experienced industry personalities and international speakers like Patrick Martinent from Australia, who represented Google, Prateep V Philip, ADGP, Tamil Nadu, Santosh Babu, the Commissioner of Indian Medicine, Santosh - Director of Symantec Corporations Engineering Division, Asia region, and Karthikeyan, an entrepreneur from the information security domain.  E-Hack event also featured a ‘Capture The Flag’ game consisting of 50 levels, where participants cracked their way to the top through the night, which helped them understand the tricks used by cyber attackers and the techniques used by administrators to prevent them. To demonstrate this, the Government of India partnered with the United Nation Development Program (UNDP) and Global Environment Fund (GEF) to conduct programmes based on solar power for market development. A business meet, held at SRM University on Tuesday, demonstrated the positives of the UNDP – GEF project on Concentrated Solar Technology (CST) by inviting faculties from various institutions, hospitals and hotels in Tamil Nadu. The project has been planned for a duration of five years (April 2012 – March 2017) under which they are targeting nearly eight States in the country, including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in South India. According to Sudhir Kumar, Joint Director of World Institute of Sustainable Energy (WISE), Tamil Nadu has shown great interest in this initiative. “This being the third campaign in Tamil Nadu, the State has already come up with nearly 45 project ideas. Out of this, we are looking to approve at least 20,” he said. The event also saw the participation of various representatives from hostels and hospitals in Tamil Nadu. The attractive, yet expensive alternative has not deterred the hospitality sectors as it gives them an opportunity to contribute to the nature. “The main idea is to give back something to the nature, so moving towards a renewable energy will be healthy decision,” said Dinesh from Taj Fishermen Cove. A recent policy announcement of the Tamil Nadu Government asking various sectors to spend three per cent of their revenue on solar energy has led many hotels to try this alternative. The project has several advantages other than being environmental friendly. The Union Government is giving users a 30 per cent subsidy for commercial use and 60 per cent subsidy for non-commercial use. Using solar power in commercial areas will also give users an 80 per cent of Income Tax rebate. Pankaj Kumar, DPM in UNDP insisted to make optimum use of this subsidized opportunity by the sectors before the subsidies are pulled back.

Three MTech programmes, including food safety and quality management, and in renewable and solar photovoltaic technology; a dual degree that will help candidates get a Master of Health Management and an MBA degree at the end of the course, and a five-year integrated MBA that students can take up after class 12 have been planned.  "Three diploma programmes, including a diploma in politics, leadership and political entrepreneurship, are being introduced," said Ponnavaiko. The other two diplomas are on value education and an international Tamil teachers' diploma. Chancellor TR Pachamuthu released the results of the entrance examination. "Counseling for the BTech course begins on June 1, and 60,000 candidates will be called for counseling in batches of 4,000 a day," Pachamuthu said.</div>

Airbus Fly Your Ideas is a contest that challenges students worldwide to develop new ideas to deliver a greener aviation industry. This competition is organised by aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).  The three geniuses, Anita Mohil, Balakrishnan Solaraju and Michael Thomas, have made it to the top five teams in the final leg of the competition that saw around 600+ teams participating. The team which is called team AVAS propose to reduce propulsion noise by means of jet exhaust shape modification using shape memory alloys. These alloys are energized by harvested electricity generated by advanced thermoelectric materials using engine heat source.<br />The other teams, which hail from Australia, Brazil, Italy and Malaysia, have equally brilliant ideas, which target fuel efficiency, traffic growth, passenger experience and community friendliness. These teams had to go through three stages of preliminary rounds with a final round and presentation that is to be held on the 14th of June in Paris, France. The winning team will receive a prize money of 30, 000 Euros and tickets to attend an air show that is to be held in Paris. The runners-up receive a prize money of 15,000 Euros.  With team AVAS having an experienced member at hand, who has attended a similar competition in China, Flying into the future-Space Exploration Innovation Contest 2012, organized by the Chinese Society of Astronautics. With a team that's nearly perfect and the project mentor Mr. K. SAKTHIVEL, a SRM faculty member who has been the backbone of the team, the members hope to make it to the top notch. To say the least the team members are nothing less than exhilarated and have their hopes pinned on winning this competition as they take off to Paris.</div>

3 students from SRM University offer peek into ‘silent’ aircraft  Three aerospace engineering students from Chennai have landed in London, with a project to create the aircraft of the future with zero propulsion noise.  The team from SRM University has reached the finals of a global competition organised by aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).  The team, comprising Balakrishnan Solaraju Murali, Michael Thomas and Anita Mohil, is among the five groups that have made it to the finals of the 'Fly Your Ideas' competition that saw 6,000 students in 618 teams from 82 countries vie for the 30,000-euro top prize.  The other teams in the final are from Australia, Brazil, Italy and Malaysia. Ideas floated in the competition included planes powered by body heat, luggage floating on a bed of air or even an aircraft running on liquid methane. The SRM team's top line idea is called 'Engine Air Cooling System for Noise Reduction.' The trio has found a way to reduce propulsion noise by modifying the shape of the jet exhaust using intelligent materials (shape memory alloys).  The final hurdle will see students present their ideas to a jury of Airbus and industry experts at the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse on June 12. The winning team will receive the 30,000-euro prize with the runners up bagging 15,000 euros.  The winners will be announced at an exclusive ceremony at Unesco's headquarters in Paris on June 14.  Aerospace engineers from across the world had to create the aircraft of the future, covering one of six themes identified by Airbus as the key 21st century challenges for a greener aviation industry.  These included addressing energy need, efficiency, affordable and traffic growth, passenger experience and community friendliness. Charles Champion, Airbus' executive vice president, engineering and Fly Your Ideas patron said, "The entries were assessed by experienced Airbus engineers who were extremely impressed by the quality of work and innovation. These talented students from around the world represent the future of our industry and I am looking forward to welcoming them to Toulouse for the final round."  Throughout the competition, Airbus mentors have worked with the teams to provide guidance and support with their projects in addition to a member of staff from their university.  Airbus and Unesco say competitions like this are becoming increasingly important after a study from the McKinsey Global Institute revealed innovation could be under threat from an engineering skills gaps that could be hitting the economy hard. McKinsey forecasted that high-tech companies will face a shortfall of 40 million skilled workers by 2020, with aerospace likely to suffer, along with motor and the medical equipment sectors.

Formula One entered the Indian scene in the year 2011, and the success of the F1 Grand Prix has certainly proven to be a stepping stone to a great future. This grand success has surely led to the evolution of the Formula Racing in India.   The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is the world governing council of automotive field which organizes various engineering competitions across the globe for students to design a prototype that is to be evaluated for its potential as a racing car.   In September of 2009, a group of engineering students from SRM University collectively formed an engineering team called 'Camber Racing' on campus to compete in FSAE (Formula Student) events worldwide. Though, they recognize themselves as a racing outfit, they compete with other teams on an engineering level instead of determining who has achieved faster lap times. Faster lap times are a factor at Formula One level of motorsports, a level they intend to reach someday.   To their utter delight, Camber Racing won the most coveted 'Best Marketing Presentation Award' in the very first edition of SUPRA SAE. For the next edition, the team underwent rigorous training, and their car, 'The Beast' won the overall 1st prize out of 65 teams and along with other awards such as 2nd in Endurance event, 2nd in Autocross event and 2nd in Skid-pad event. Camber Racing has been to the world's 3rd toughest and highest altitude rally, the Raid De Himalayas in October 2010 and completed it.   In a very short time, Camber Racing has gone on to become the most popular SUPRA SAE team in the country. Camber Racing, in its attempts to promote its sponsors, conducted a Public Relations Event in collaboration with  Aaruush (the techno management fest of SRM University) 2011-2012 by displaying the LJM 01 and conducting a Demo Run of the car. Aaruush'11 and '12 witnessed Camber Racing as the ultimate showstopper, and established itself a great fan following! As part of its future endeavours, Camber Racing has associated itself as the education partners with South India's biggest Auto Expo held in Chennai.
