The economic equity “is the biggest challenge” for the country

Akbar, Editorial Director of India Today, who was visiting the SRM University’s Kattankulathur Campus and addressed a group of students and faculty cutting across disciplines. Democracy meant equality surpassing such facets as color and creed and that the concept of a minority has to see the framework of empowerment,  Mr.Akbar said. Secularism is not the elimination of faith but in ensuring the co-existence of all faiths, the reputed scribe said. “ I cannot think of even one Hindu philosopher or writer who has been nasty against Prophet Mohammad and Vice Versa”, Mr.Akbar said adding that China may be a successful nation but not a modern nation.  Gender equality, Mr.Akbar said, had to go beyond looking at the fine lines of the laws laid or passed but in the implementation of one’s own thinking. Jawaharlal Nehru, by his own admission, saw his achievement in the passing of the Hindu Code Bill but acknowledged that his big failure was in not being able to provide Muslim women a similar Bill, Mr.Akbar pointed out. Mr.Akbar’s visit comes at  a time when a slew of media houses—India Today, Zee TV, DNA and Education Times (of The Times of India Group)—have ranked SRM University as India’s Number One Multiple Stream Private University. Mr.Akbar exhorted the faculty and students to rise and meet the challenges of modern India as everyone had a role to play.  “The poor must feel that they have a part of rising India… For India this is the biggest challenge”, Mr.Akbar said making a point that it was no longer valid to talk about economic equality but only of economic equity. The concept behind the competition is that a fictional manufacturing company has contacted a design team to develop a small Formula style race car. The prototype is to be evaluated for its potential as a racing car. The target marketing group for the race car is the nonprofessional weekend autocross racer. Each team designs and produces a prototype based on well laid down rules & regulations. The competition comprises seven events: Cost and Manufacturing Analysis, Presentation, Design, Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, and Endurance.   The Formula SAE competition is organised by the Society of Automotive Engineers and is held in UK, USA, Germany, Italy, Austria, Australia, Spain, Brasil. SRM University to commercialise patented diabetic drug

SRM University plans to commercialise its US patented herbal diabetic drug in around six months time, said the private varsity's vice chancellor.   Vice Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko said: "We have incorporated a company called SRM Pharma Ltd. In another six months we may launch the drug. We can get the drug manufactured from a unit in north India."   Last December, the US Patent office granted patent for an herbal formulation for prevention and management of type-2 diabetes mellitus and vascular complications associated with the disease.   A six member team of researchers led by Govind Prasad Dubey and comprising Aruna Agrawal, Nirupama Dubey, Shipra Dubey, Rajesh Dubey and Samamtsan Mercy Deborah invented the drug and secured the patent which was assigned to SRM University, said Ponnavaikko.   Type-II diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that is primarily characterised by insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia, states the background notes on the invention.   It is rapidly increasing in the developed countries and there is also evidence that this pattern will be followed in much of the rest of the parts of the world in coming years.   About 90-95 percent of all North Americans are suffering from type-II diabetes and 20 percent of the population are over the age of 65 years.   According to Ponnavaikko, the university has already filed two more inventions for patent with the US patent office.   "We will shortly file patent application for two more herbal drugs for menopause, cardiovascular and obesity problems," he said.

A seminar on good clinical practice “GCP” was conducted by Interdisciplinary School of Indian Systems of Medicine (ISISM) at SRM Medical College Hospital Seminar Hall. Basic objective of the seminar wasto educate and familiarize both clinical and basic researchers in GCP while simultaneously updating researchers associated with clinical drug trials. The seminar started of with the welcome address by Dr.K.Ilango, Dean, ISISM, SRM University, followed by the Inaugural address by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Medical), Dr. P.Thangaraj. Vice Chancellor Dr.M. Ponnavaikko presented the presidential address where he emphasized the effectiveness of traditional medicines in curing many ailments. Students can conduct their own programs in English and Tamil.”said Ms. Divyasri, StationManager, Muthucharam CR.  Special programs are queued up for bus drivers of SRM University and Maintenance staff on health awareness and occupational hazards, Awareness program for Government High School girlstudents on child survival and safe motherhood.
